Slip Yoke Eliminator (SYE) Kits Overview


The model of the transfer case will be stamped in to the circular ID tag.

Often referred to as a Slip Yoke Eliminator (SYE) fixed yoke kit, short shaft kit or tail shaft conversion. This kit does not actually eliminate a slip yoke but rather moves it to a different part of the dive train. On the original application the provision for compression and extension of the drive shaft is a function of both the drive shaft slip yoke and the out-put shaft on the transfer case. After the conversion, this provision for compression and extension becomes a function of the drive shaft only.

You will then have a drive shaft that is longer than stock which will reduce joint angles and the ability to use a Constant Velocity (CV) double cardan type drive shaft. This will reduce driveshaft vibrations for smoother operation and a longer life on the related components.

With this conversion you should be able to keep the transfer case at stock height. You will however, want to be sure to pitch the differential so the pinion points more or less directly at the out-put of the transfer case, maintaining a minimal joint angle at the differential end. Any of these conversions will give you a fixed yoke/flange on the rear out-put of the transfer case.

All of these conversions are offered as a complete package that includes everything required to modify the transfer case along with our high quality CV drive shaft. This drive shaft will be built to fit your vehicle and is not a "universal fit" drive shaft. Once you’ve decided which kit you want.

 

Confirm joint size at differental end - always required with Cherokee applications

If you have a Cherokee or a non-stock differential, you need to confirm joint size at differential end.
As an overview, (assuming you have the 231 transfer case) the options and prices are as follows:
  • Super-Short Conversion with CV drive shaft using the XC or XB Slip Yoke & spline stub is $600
     
  • Super-Short Conversion with CV drive shaft using the S Slip Yoke & spline stub is $570
     
  • Super-Duty Conversion with CV drive shaft using the XC or XB Slip Yoke & spline stub is $575
     
  • Super-Duty Conversion with CV drive shaft using the S Slip Yoke & spline stub is $545
     
  • Advance Adapters Conversion with CV drive shaft using the XC or XB Slip Yoke & spline stub is $525
     
  • Advance Adapters Conversion with CV drive shaft using the S Slip Yoke & spline stub is $495

All of the above use a new main shaft for the transfer case which is larger/stronger than the stock main shaft and no core is required.

  • Our conversion which uses a modified stock main shaft with CV drive shaft using the XC or XB Slip Yoke & spline stub is $400 after return of core.
     
  • Our conversion which uses a modified stock main shaft with CV drive shaft using the S Slip Yoke & spline stub is $370 after return of core.

Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts - Differences between the S and X




The S spline is a conventional spline stub that will yield a safe, effective and usable stroke of 3”. The X spline is longer than the S spline. The X spline is cut for the full length of the spline stub. This gives a bit more than twice the contact area between the slip yoke and spline stub and a stroke of 4-1/2". This in and of itself will net more than twice the life on these two components.

With the XB configuration, we will use a heavy rubber boot which is banded down with stainless steel banding to seal all of the contaminates out and keep the grease in. The XC configuration uses the same slip yoke & spline stub but instead of using the rubber boot, we drill and tap the slip yoke for a grease fitting and use a dust cap which has convolutions that follow the spline stub for sealing. We consider the XB configuration to be the longest lasting and best value.
