Shaft Selection: A or B?
Spline DifferencesWith a conventional two joint drive shaft you need to keep the out-put of the transfer case & the pinion parallel within 1 degree, and in relationship to either the drive shaft should be running at absolutely no greater than 15 degrees ( this is a pushed limit).
If you can not fall within this parameter, then you will want to pitch the differential so that the pinion points directly at the out-put of the transfer case (maintaining 3 degrees or less joint angle at the differential end) & run a double cardan (C.V.) drive shaft.
The latter option will require changing the rear out-put yoke ($60 to $90) on the transfer case to one that is compatible with both the t-case & of course the drive shaft. In order to properly supply the correct yoke you may need to disconnect the drive shaft at the transfer case end, remove the nut & washer that hold on this yoke to count the splines. You will have either 10 or 26. The model 18 t-case will have 10 splines. The model 20 will have either 10 or 26. The model 300 will have 26 splines. Other transfer cases will require a different yoke.
We will also need to know the length required for the drive shaft face of yoke to face of yoke or what would be center of joint to center of joint. And if you have something other than the standard differential joint size I.e. Ford 9" etc. (Check out our measuring guide in step three of our quote page)
For the drive basic Jeep shaft itself, we have two different options available, depending on what you want/need in regards to cost and features. Both shafts will be built brand new, complete with joints & balanced. A drive shaft built from all premium quality Spicer components is $269. I have no concerns with this shaft in regards to a strength issue. Or our top of the line shaft, built with all premium quality components and the long travel, full length booted slip & spline is $295. For long term dollar spent, I consider the latter to be the best value.
If you determine that the conventional two joint shaft will work well for you, we have two options available. For the typical Jeep application, a upgraded heavy wall tube larger/stronger slip yoke & spline stub @ $189 or the top of the line shaft with the long travel booted slip & spline for $219. One of these shafts would also work fine in if used in an application with a shackle reversal, automatic transmission and revolver shackles. Call us with your specific requirements. The drive shaft cost may range from $219 to $529.
